This pelican bookmark was inspired by drives along A1A near Flagler Beach, where brown pelicans glide effortlessly above the shoreline in groups known as squadrons.
One of my favorite things about Florida’s coast is watching these birds travel together. From a small group of 2-3 or large groups of ten or more. They will follow the food. Riding the ocean breeze just above the waves, they move with such purpose and precision that it’s hard not to stop and watch.
Driving along A1A, there are moments when the pelicans seem to be traveling right alongside you. As they soar parallel to the road, matching your pace for a few seconds before gliding ahead, it feels as though you’re sharing the journey. Those fleeting moments have stay as spectacular wildlife memory.
Pelicans may not be the flashiest birds on the coast, but their grace, teamwork, and unmistakable silhouette have made them one of the animals I look forward to observing when I'm near the beaches. This artwork is a tribute to those squadrons of pelicans and the simple joy of spotting them along the shore.
