This gopher tortoise art was inspired by a young tortoise we found slowly making its way across A1A. We carefully carried the little traveler to a nearby park so it could continue its journey safely, and that encounter became the inspiration for this illustration.

Since then, gopher tortoises have become some of my favorite Florida neighbors. We have four regular visitors in our backyard, and over time they’ve all earned names. There’s Georgie, our largest female, George, a slightly smaller male, Tina, another female who wandered through, and most recently Ruthie—a tiny youngster no bigger than my hand who delighted in driving my dogs absolutely crazy.

One afternoon, Georgie spent nearly an hour inside our fenced backyard. Eventually she wandered over and waited patiently by the gate to be “let out.” Our gates just happen to sit along their natural travel routes, so it was pure coincidence—but watching her stand there so patiently made it feel like she was politely asking us to open the door. It’s moments like that that make me smile. Gopher tortoises always seem wonderfully unbothered, happily munching on grass, digging burrows, and going about their day at their own steady pace.

The more I learned about them, the more remarkable they became. Every burrow they dig becomes a home for countless other animals, making the gopher tortoise one of Florida’s most important keystone species. It’s amazing to think that these quiet, unhurried neighbors are constantly building homes for an entire community of wildlife.
