Celebrate the beauty of the elegant Barred Owl with this original wildlife artwork inspired by a mated pair that lived in the nature preserve behind my home. Affectionately nicknamed Ricky and Lucy, they became some of my favorite neighbors, filling the evenings with their unforgettable calls and reminding me that wild Florida is never far away.
On my very first night in the house, I stepped outside around midnight with my dog and heard an eerie chorus echoing through the trees. The sounds were unlike anything I had ever heard—more like monkeys than birds—and completely caught me off guard. Once I discovered the calls belonged to a pair of Barred Owls, curiosity replaced surprise. Over time, I was fortunate enough to photograph and observe them as they perched quietly in the trees, hunted through the preserve, and called back and forth to one another each day.
